January Book Review By Sue Petrofsky
“The Mumbo Jumbo Fix: A survival Guide for Effective Doctor-Patient-Nurse Communication”, By Michael J. Grace, JD, CPHAM, was written by a licensed attorney, Michael J. Grace. He was a founding partner of a San Diego based law firm that specialized in the defense of healthcare providers, and now is a certified professional in healthcare risk management (advising hospitals). His book is a look at the importance of communication between all parties in the medical arena – doctors, nurses, and patients.
The book is well written, and NOT full of Mumbo Jumbo, and progresses in a very easy to understand manner, avoiding the legalese that so many medical books about legal issues can fall into. Although the book’s purpose is to tell medical professionals how to better communicate, there is enough in it from the patient’s perspective to make it a worthwhile read, especially if you want to learn the ins-and-outs of the ways a medical team might communicate with you. Grace’s entertaining format, including some great cartoons for a laugh, makes for a quick and informative read. Some of the topics covered include how to deal with different patient personalities, what is needed to be legally provided to a patient’s family, what informed consent is, and the Patient’s Bill of Rights. Each chapter ends with a “Do This” and a “Don’t Do This” page, which helps consolidate the chapter. If a patient has any concerns about the legal parts of their medical treatment, this is a great little book to answer your questions.
